Minutes - September 2010
MINUTES -- September SPBG Meeting 2010
September meeting held at Alchemy Restaurant at 8:30 on the 29th of September
Chaired by Donna Walker, South Bark Dog Wash
(Next meeting on Wed., October 27, 8:30 am, at Alchemy Restaurant)
Police:
Officer De La Pena reported that there was a break-in at a house on Date St. The people were at the residence, they took a purse and left through a window. Officer Dick Ward will be at our next meeting, his cell is 760-994-6317.
Old House Fair:
Maureen reported that it was the most successful Old House Fair in 13 years, and presented a financial report. Highlights: $27,000 in revenue (up $2,600 from last year), $19,735 in expenses (down $900 from last year). It was voted on to approve $1,500 in bonuses, and to transfer $4,100 to the South Park Business Group in order to help fund the marketing activities, and to enable us to hold the 2011 ASK Campaign fees down. A total of $10,000 will go into reserves for the Old House Fair. The 2011 event will be held on Sat., June 18, 2011.
Walkabouts:
Holiday Walkabout date is Dec. 4th
Most likely you’ll get these minutes after the Fall Walkabout, so in
reference to the Holiday one, the group discussed having Pathfinders
possibly on hand at the corners of 30th & Juniper to monitor the
pedestrian traffic. Those interested in doing this are asked to attend
the Fall Walkabout in order to familiarize themselves more with what
happens and also to attend the next SPBG meeting.
The theme for the Holiday Walkabout will be “Twinkle, Twinkle, Mix and Mingle” (thank you Lisa Vella from South Bark, she was having a good creativity morning). Start thinking now about what you will do to incorporate the theme into your plans. Please make sure to get your information for the Holiday Walkabout to Marsha, so she can post on Facebook and also create the list of what to do. Send your info via email to SPBG@lucyslist.net.
Tiffany Sherer, guest speaker from the BID Council --
The South Park Group has been approved for another grant, we should learn about the amount soon. We were awarded the highest amount out of the 10 micro districts that applied. Way to go Anne! (Anne Mery from the Grove puts together our application).
Tiffany did caution the group about certain aspects of the Walkabout…keep it community based (don’t get too big) or else it starts to hit the city’s radar, and we could be hit with fines and incur significant additional expense to permit and manage. Pedestrian safety is key. No open flames near parked cars. No blocking traffic. Be sure there is room on sidewalks for pedestrians, so they are not forced to walk in the street. I think you see a train of caution here…all businesses have to keep in mind these things or it could harm the event itself. If the event becomes on any official radar, the event could be hit with fines, permits, etc., thus possibly causing the event to be discontinued.
Tiffany offered to work with Anne (the Grove) on creating a list and letter for the businesses. Anne (the Grove) and Lisa (South Bark) will be visiting a few of the businesses that may not be aware of this before this Fall Walkabout.
CDC/MAD:
The Gala was successful, Pedro Anaya was not in attendance so more updates to come at the next meeting.
MAD: A reminder that Harvest Landscaping is doing the maintenance in the
area. 1 person is in charge of a designated area, all day, every day.
If you have any questions or comments, you are encouraged to go to goldenhillcdc.org and send an e-mail to Alex (in charge of the maintenance personnel).
Additionally, MAD is currently looking for places to put flower/plant
containers. If you would like one in front of your business, please
contact Alex.
Todd Gloria’s Office:
Anthony
Bernal was on hand to let everyone know that Oct. is Energy Awareness
Month. He mentioned having a representative from SDG&E come to the
next meeting to discuss the rebate program available for businesses.
Anthony did report that the sidewalks are getting done! There are about
300 locations in District 3 alone.
Please contact Anthony at 619-236-6633 if you have any questions.
Ron Roberts’ Office:
Woo-Jin Shim was present to remind everyone about the “Doing Business with the County of San Diego” workshop on November 5th at the Kearny Mesa Center, if you’re interested, please call him at 619-531-6002. Also, the County has approved $3 mil. for a helicopter from SDG&E (SDG&E pays for 1st 1 ½ hour, then the county pays). Also, $5 mil was granted for additional equipment for fire.
Greater Golden Hill Update of Community Plan Report
This subcommittee will meet next on Thursday Oct. 7th at 8:30 am at Alchemy. The Community Charettes are:
October 9 (8:30 am – 1:30 pm) at Albert Einstein
October 20 (6:30pm – 9pm) at Christ United
November 6 (8:30am – 1:30pm) at Golden Hill Elementary
If you are interested in certain topics, please contact Matt from Alchemy for a proposed agenda on the meetings.
It is reported that South Park has one of the best bicycle plans of the
communities. If you are interested in having a bike rack in front of
your location, please let Matt from Alchemy know, include a diagram and
address.
Tiffany Sherer reported that the BID Council is looking into Bike Corrals.
Matt from Alchemy talked to MTS about signs at the bus stops, MTS is
very excited about the signs, but those in the area cannot be painted in
South Park colors. MTS is concerned about the hardware costs and want
cross promotional marketing with the businesses. Basically this would be
that if a MTS rider comes into your store, you either pay for their
ticket or give some type of discount, etc. Contact Matt if you’re
interested…matt@alchemysandiego.com
It was passed to set aside some funds to have the maps for the bus stops designed.
Bike stickers are still available to hand out for free, please stop by Studio Maureen to pick them up.
New business:
Christ United approached the group to become a full member, had submitted a check for the ASK Campaign. The South Park Business Group decided to stay with the stance that the membership is to stay “for-profit” businesses. Churches, schools, community groups, etc. are welcome to attend the meetings, however. The website will be updated to again list Christ United as a “Community Resource.”
Alynn with Right Hand Girl (a guest of South Bark).
Both Lisa and Donna were very enthusiastic about Alynn’s ability to help
all market and promote their businesses. She specializes in social
media. Alynn has been terrific helping to bring about South Bark’s big
