Following are minutes from the October and November, 2008, meetings of the South Park Business Group.  There was no meeting in December.

SOUTH PARK BUSINESS GROUP
MONTHLY MEETING
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2008, 8:30 AM
San Diego Moose Lodge, 1649 30th Street

NEXT MEETING:  fourth Wednesday of the month, Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at SD Moose Lodge

IMPORTANT 2009 DATES
Spring Walkabout – Saturday, March 28th
Summer Walkabout – Saturday, July 25th
Harvest Walkabout – Saturday, October 3rd
Old House Fair – Saturday, June 20th
San Diego South Park Community Yard Sale – Saturday, June 28th

I.                  Donna Walker, South Bark Dog Wash, chaired the meeting.  Thanks to Jinna Albright for the great coffee and holiday display.  Those present introduced themselves.

II.               Police Report – Lt. Dawn Summers & Officer John Graham.  You can reach Dawn Summers at (619) 744-9502 dsummers@pd.sandiego.gov

Lt. Summers said that she had a call from Rosemary Downing, Executive Director, of the Greater Golden Hill CDC, who indicated that the CDC Council was concerned about increased criminal activity in the area.  When she investigated the records, other than the robbery at Sombrero Restaurant and an attack on a pedestrian, the statistics did not support increased criminal activity.  Of the eleven neighborhoods she oversaw, South Park had one of the lowest incidences of illegal activity. Fourteen minor crimes were reported last month. The question is why has she not heard about these resident concerns?  Are residents/business owners reporting incidents?  Are dispatchers putting calls about these incidents through to these officers?

Three new break-ins in the past month of concern:  South Park Bar & Grill (broke through the ceiling and stole the Company safe, Gala Foods and Food Bowl (broke a window and took a sign).

Concern was also expressed over increased number of bad checks and counterfeit $100 bills being passed.

A woman with dark hair is hanging around the Juniper & 30th area for some time now and has been seen to pass counterfeit $100 bills.  The Grove among other businesses no longer accepts $100 bills and keeps very little cash on site.  Lt. Summers said that she is not aware that police have received any calls regarding counterfeit bills being, passed in this community.

Lt. Summers stated that she will see that this area receives more attention and will put more officers in the community when possible.

Good safety precautions for businesses:

•        Don’t leave doors open and unlocked.  In particular, always lock back doors.

•        Be diligent

•        Don’t leave valuable things out.

•        If, deliveries are being made, assign someone to watch entrances.

 III.             Ask for Funds

Letter has gone out requesting an annual business contribution of $150 from each local business to handle expenses such as South Park Scene webpage, PR efforts.  A team of Marsha Smelkinson, Joe Grant, and Lisa Vella have divided up the community and will be personally contacting each business owner.

Eight to ten checks have  been submitted as of Dec. 15.  Donna Walker requested to know how many businesses have been contacted to date and the percentage of this number who have returned checks. Marsha Smelkinson stated that it was to early for an accurate report.

All appear to agree that this contribution is an important investment even in this recession.  No one has resisted.   Marsha said that the team will follow up on checks and try to collect all by January.

   IV       Holiday Walkabout  December 6th.
Local business activities and events scheduled for the Holiday Walkabout have been included on our webpage southpark scene.com.   Marsha solicited businesses and included all activities and events on
the webpage.  She would like to see the webpage updated monthly.

KPBS advertising about the upcoming Walkabout has been frequent since the contract was signed last Monday, Dec. 1st   These 30 second ads appear to be drawing interest to the community.

Kerry Spark of Cinderella’s Attic, a new nonprofit 501 c3 ,said she was hoping to promote her non profit at the Walkabout.  She would like some coverage on the webpage and a table for example, in front of the Daily Scoop on 30th Street.    Kerry is a high school teacher who hopes to collect formals and accessories for teen aged girls.in order to promote their confidence.  She has solicited Poway High School, Carmel High School and Torrey Pines High School for dresses.  She would like to provide help to girls at Garfield, Cortez Hill and Twain Alternative Schools where many girls do not have access to formal dresses.  She will accept contributions of dresses or paint suits.  Walkabout policy of allowing only sidewalk vendors in front of stores whose owners approve them was explained.

Consensus was that it was really too late to mount an effective campaign for this nonprofit or even obtain permission to have a table outside a business. The next Walkabout on March 28th would probably be the earliest something could be done.  Suggestion was made that it probably would be helpful for Kerry to flyer the businesses as to the mission, purpose and goals of Cinderella’s Attic;.

Jinna Albright of Thomas’ Bike Shop encouraged businesses to put up lighting in trees and in front of their stores for the Walkabout.

V.               MAD (Maintenance Assessment District)
 David Skillman was not present.

The group discussed the activity of the Urban Corp workers.  These workers have been active sweeping streets, emptying and cleaning trash cans, cutting trees, etc. For example, every street in South Park is being swept  at least once monthly and some zone 1 business district streets are being swept twice weekly. These workers are being paid for by the Greater Golden Hill Maintenance District funds that are administered by the   Golden Hill CDC.  Alex Ibarra, Program Manager directly supervises their activity.  If you have any concerns, you can reach Alex at (619) 664-6138  alex@goldenhillcac.org.

VI.Community Updates
A.     The business community is sorry to see Under the Sun close its doors.  This may be a sign of the times.

Inventory was sold in two days.

B.      Jinna Albright is collecting bikes for Father Joe’s Village Toy Bag.  She has talked to all local bike owners.

C.     South Bark Dog Wash held an adoption event.  They were able to find homes for 5 cats and 5 dogs.

D.     New businesses openings would seem delayed.  It would appear that the restaurant On the Waterfront has dropped out as the business could not obtain a liquor license.

Sam Chammas has delayed opening his new restaurant.  With his losing the lease on the Turf Club, as he is focused on opening a new Turf Club in La Mesa.

Wine Bar has delayed its opening as it has not been able to obtain a liquor license.

Those attending again affirmed their desire to advocate for “buying local.”  In this business climate we   need to affirm our successes as a business community and work for the “common good” of the South Park  business community as a whole.

Leyla Chavez So Childish reported that she had not been receiving emails from South Park Business Group including the minutes and agenda.  Several others reported not receiving minutes although they had attended the meeting.  Membership agreed that we needed to review South Park Business Group email lists in total.

4.      Webpage – Luci Dumas

South Park business members have paid an initial fee of $50 for a full description to be on the community Web page (Southparkscene dot com).  Monthly updates to the webpage are recommended. Suggestion was made that it would be helpful if businesses put -a link to the community web site on their business website.

a.        Luci is recommending that the South Park web site address be put on business size cards to be placed by the register of all participating businesses.

b.      Anne Mercy noted that the web site address is included

c.       While the Micro-District Grant awarded to South Park Business Group in the amount of $8500 for this current year is helping with many expenses, i.e., Walkabout radio ads, trolley, this grant is a seed grant and should be considered start-up monies.  It may not be renewed next year.  Our new public relations efforts will require additional dollars.  All businesses are encouraged to participate and donate this annual fee.  The PR Committee intends to maintain a yearly contribution of $150 for a minimum of two years.

Because of marketing deadlines, it is crucial for Peyton to know what you/your business is doing for the
holidays. Please email her at:  peyton@baybirdinc.com.  In addition, be aware if Peyton is asking for a response or material that she needs it immediately at these are very close deadlines/turnarounds.
Your story always needs an angle that editorial staffs can grab onto.

6.      Walkabouts

a.       Harvest Walkabout was considered a success.  Concern was expressed that we needed to build on our successes.  The merits of a South Park Indie Craft Show were discussed. Maureen spoke about her
efforts to develop such an event in the past.

b.      Next Holiday Walkabout is planned for Saturday. December 3rd, 6 pm- 10 pm

Marketing must orient public to what businesses are available in the neighborhood.  Walkabouts from a media standpoint are “not special.”.  We need to diversify this event in order to spotlight what is special.

Now planned is the trolley carrying carolers.  Trolley will go from The Grove to Champagne Taste to South Bark Dog Wash to Grant’s Market/Studio for Maureen by Thomas Bike Shop.  Everyone sings on the trolley.

Studio Maureen will have annual Santa.

c.        Issue of Outside Sidewalk Crafters was discussed/  South Park Walkabout Policy is that each business needs to give permission to crafters to set up business in front of their store front.  South Park business
owners need to be sensitive to using outsiders who may be competitive with a local business and dis-courage sidewalk crafters who do not represent South Park ambiance.
