Meeting held Wed., June 30, 2010, 8:30am at Alchemy Restaurant

**_Chaired by Donna Walker from South Bark Dog Wash
Next meeting to be on July 28th at Alchemy Restaurant at 8:30 am_**

POLICE:
Dani Stroud was in attendance again to remind all business owners that the City Attorney’s office is there to help should anyone have any “quality of life” problems with operating their business, please contact her at dstroud@sandiego.gov.
Officer Suzy De La Pena was also present to remind people that she is a resource as well, she can be contacted at sdelapena@pd.sandiego.gov
Officer De La Pena did want to let businesses know that a high school girl was walking home when a male grabbed her breast. He is described as Hispanic, 38-40 years old, 5’8” – 5’9” with a light full beard and mustache. Some things that stood out on him were his yellowing teeth with many gaps as well as a gold chain necklace with a class ring on it. This did happen a little south of our community, but everyone is cautioned to keep their eyes peeled.
Captain’s Advisory meeting will be on Tuesday, July 27th at 5:30 at Central Division , 25th & Imperial.

Greater Golden Hill PLANNING Update
The subcommittee is still in the process of coordinating Bike South Park with the community update plan. They are solidifying their thoughts on what South Park is, e.g. building the character/branding. They will have a meeting to go over some ideas before the July SPBG meeting and hope to present something at that time. They are also working on the parking issues facing the area.

OLD HOUSE FAIR:
HUGE success…10% more home tour tickets were sold this year from last, even with the increase in prices.
The dog adoption part of the booths was a big hit and helped to drive traffic into that area of vendors (who are very happy with the event). The bike corral was a great addition, many Fair goers were seen riding their bikes around the neighborhood.
Maureen did state that she has more resource guides available, if anyone wants some.
Some suggestions for next year were: more tables for relaxing and eating, a few different music/bands to attract the younger “hipper” residents that are moving in.
Maureen is awaiting financial reports from GGHCDC, and should have final figures for the August meeting (she will be on vacation in July).

WALKABOUT:
Maureen has been in touch with CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) to see if they will be able to help with the pedestrian traffic. They are working on determining which office would handle that.
Merchants and tables on the sidewalks: the group has decided that to keep the event somewhat “unorganized” to prevent the necessity of getting special event permits, so the following tact will be used:
If a business wants to have a booth during the walkabout, they are to work with an individual business and get the approval to be in front of their location. IF someone is in front of your storefront and they don’t have approval, simply ask them to leave and explain that the purpose of the Walkabout is an event for the participating business owners and that they are welcome to come to the meetings. A flier that goes into more detail and includes information on acquiring a business license is being constructed, and this may be given to the vendors to help the situation from becoming personal.
A reminder to ALL businesses to watch the distribution of alcohol (especially to minors). A good way is to station an employee or volunteer at the table … this will restrict minors and also limit those individuals who would otherwise take more than they need to.
At the summer walkabout, Patty Fares with Urban Safaris will be conducting 2 guided tours, at 6 pm and tat 8 pm. For this first one she will be paid by the group. It was tossed around that in the future she be in charge of collecting money for her tours and the businesses will help promote her.
SEND YOUR PLANS FOR THE WALKABOUT TO MARSHA @ spbg@lucyslist.net

GGHCDC
The wine tasting on Saturday was a huge success, there will be a great selection of wine up for auction at the Gala on Aug. 27th at the Balboa Golf Course Lodge, tickets are $75 with a maximum of 100 sold. The Gala will feature a catered sit down dinner and live music.

MAD:
No meeting in June

CONTINUING BUSINESS:
The South Park Guide (printed by the North Park News) is out, please stop by Studio Maureen or The Grove to pick up your copies for distribution.
Walkabout postcards are available, please stop by Studio Maureen.
The Bike South Park stickers have had great feedback and are available. Please see Monkey C Media, Jennifer did mention that the 1 x 6 inch versions will be available in a couple of weeks.
With the Bike South Park growing, please remind cyclists to follow the rules, many are cruising through the stop signs and are creating a traffic hazard. We love the fact that they are biking, but we’d like them to be safe.

NEW BUSINESS:
Michael Kinsman from Hoy Hoy Boys was in attendance, he and his fellow businessmen put on the OB Street Fair. They plan events and would like to branch out to other areas of town. He wanted to let the group know that they like South Park and would like to be of use. He may be reached at kinsman@cox.net.

Park 2 Park (represented by Sandor) has resumed business. They will be servicing the 30th on 30th, as well as the North Park Music Scene and the Pride Festival weekend. The vans will be running 7 pm – 1 am on Friday and Saturday throughout the summer.

Moose Lodge: they still don’t have any money or the insurance to fix the fire damage, but they are still having their Monday night hamburgers and the electricity was on, so that’s a good sign.

The Union Tribune ran a story on a community in San Francisco that took a parking lot and created a temporary park of sorts to it…provides a template for South Park in the future, more information can be found on their website, search under Pavement to Parks.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Nancy Sherman has moved to New Mexico and she will be SORELY missed. Maureen created a 1 of a kind garden tile for her new digs letting her know how much her community involvement has meant.

A big thank you was given to the Old House Fair for having the dogs up for adoption, 4 or 5 of them received homes!!

Alchemy will be having it’s 2nd Annual BBQ & Bike Bash on the 4th of July. Stop by for some bar-b-que and decorate your bike (there’s a contest!!). Jinna from Thomas Bike Shop is putting together bike decorating kits for the kids.

Some new businesses are moving into the warehouse…local businesses are encouraged to stop in and invite them to the meetings. The spaces are set to open in September or October.

That’s it folks, let me know if you have any questions or if I’ve left anything out.
If you read this before the big weekend I hope you all have a safe and fun 4th…if not, then I hope you HAD a safe and fun 4th ☺
