Minutes - Jan. 2010 Meeting
SPBG January meeting held 1/27 at the Moose Lodge at 8:30 am.
Chaired by Maureen from Studio Maureen and the Next Door Gallery.
Next meeting: February 24, 2010, 8:30am.
Police:
Burglaries have been occurring. A parolee ran from officers and threw the gun, since then things have been quiet. The man has been described as a Hispanic male, in his 20’s 5’7” 140 pounds.
Jinna from Thomas Bike Shop reported that there have been a number of bike thefts. One of her customers has a video and someone has been coming into their shop trying to sell bikes, Don has the address.
Safety Committee:
Feb. 8th from 6-7:30 pm at Albert Einstein.
Task force to throw out ideas to help keep neighborhood safe. Some ideas are implementing a “neighborhood watch” or residents and businesses keeping their lights on longer.
Public Relations:
It was reported previously that the grant funds that the South Park Business Group had received were suspended. The City is honoring the contract and the group will receive the originally awarded $6,300. It is on a reimbursement basis.
ASK Campaign:
Each business in the area is being Asked to contribute $100 by 2/10. Payment (check to South Park Business Group) can be dropped off at The Grove, South Bark, Studio Maureen or Grants. It defrays the cost of printed materials (postcards, posters, KPBS, etc.) for the area. As well as different incidentals for the Walkabouts, Old House Fair, etc. Only those businesses that have submitted their payment will be included on the website listings and event publicity.
Walkabout:
December Follow-up….
Too early? Crowds were not as big as in past years. Did Balboa Nights hurt the event? Some reported that their customers feel that Balboa Nights is too big and like having the Walkabout as an alternative..
Laila from So Childish commented that possibly having the same thing quarterly is causing a burnout…Spring and fall do something different, i.e. keeping the premise of the Walkabout but tweaking it a little, try to incorporate something that would draw in the fringe businesses. Committee to be composed of Keith from Pathfinders, Michael from Posh Wash, Laila from So Childish, Teresa from Kwan Yin and Cyndi from the North Park News..
Postcards:
Do again? Those in attendance do like them. Print for the 1st 2, but leave the option to add new businesses that may come into the neighborhood. It was talked about creating a directory or a bigger card to incorporate those businesses that support the Walkabout but don’t have a storefront. Possibly putting large poster in the kiosk 1 week prior to Walkabout. Another idea is to acquire e-mail addresses at the info booth and send out e-blasts..
Old House Fair:
12th annual Old House Fair will be Sat., June 19, 2010. Website is active at: www.TheOldHouseFair.com. Sponsorship, advertising, and exhibitor info and applications are on the website.
2 ways to have a booth: 1. if your business deals with restoring, renewing, refurbishing or 2. if your storefront is within 1 mile of the fair.
Will provide food, music, children’s area, walking tour and trolley tour.
GGHCDC is the fiscal agent - they have the accounting, facilities and are a 501 C3; as a partner they receive 10% of the money coming in.
2009 profit (after expenses and reserve) was $3,000 which went to SPBG.
Maureen worked at least 60 hours ($7,200 worth) last year and was paid $5,000. She is willing to do it again this year for the same amount. The group agreed unanimously that this was a good idea.
It will be on June 19th 10-4 pm.
They are looking for volunteers and historic home tour houses.
$5 for the trolley tour and $15 for the home tour were 2009 prices.
Facebook:
South Park needs to redo their page to have them listed as a Fan Page. Facebook will discontinue the group if it remains listed as an individual, and all contacts will be lost..
Bike Campaign: No new information.
CDC: No Update.
MAD: Continuing along.
GGHCDC:
Subcommittee report for the community plan update (see report that was attached to the original January agenda).
It is important to attend the meetings to give input. Click on this link for agenda and map for the meeting on Feb. 3, 6 pm at Balboa Park. They are dealing with zoning, land use in the community. The City does seem to want input.

Lulu’s by Travis Parker is offering couples pedicures.
City Attorney’s office wanted to remind everyone that they are there for the neighborhood to help protect against misdemeanors, vandalism, petty theft, public intoxication, homeless. Also if you provide information leading to a graffiti conviction, you could get up to $500.
Albert Einstein is adding the South Park Scene to its website.
Rebecca from Rebecca’s Coffeehouse reported that she was blasted in the face and hair with a pellet gun. There were three girls about 15 and a boy, 19 in a car driving around the neighborhood. They shot into the Daily Scoop and also hit a woman and her small child. They were caught and were charged with a misdemeanor..

They are also still promoting their Absolute Miracle and will have a spot on A&E in May.
The Grove was on TV with Larry Himmel.
Kwan Yin Holistic Massage is offering 2 for 1 in February.
The Station is now open at noon (no Monday’s). They did receive a “Grand Orchid” for architecture, the plaque dedication should be in 4-6 weeks. They do plan on building a “kid corral”.
Posh Wash is still offering free wifi and coffee and will be giving away free soap on Wednesdays during attended hours.
Lynn Scelfo would like to remind everyone that it is a good time to invest in properties and real estate.
North Park News wants to remind everyone that we do provide a full page ad for the Walkabouts, please call for more information.
That’s it folks…I don’t think I forgot anything, it was a pretty exciting meeting for those of you that couldn’t make it. See you next month!.
