MEETING MINUTES - SOUTH PARK BUSINESS GROUP
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2009, 8:30 AM, at MOOSE LODGE
(See below minutes for full list of attendees and important upcoming dates.)
Marsha Smelkinson, Big Kitchen and Lucyslist.net, chaired the meeting. Attending individuals introduced themselves.
Police Report – John Graham SDPD
The police continue to investigate the number of break-ins in South Park, mainly around 30th/Fern and Beech. Recent break- in was noted at Laurel’s. Grant’s Deli also reported a break-in at about 4:00 am, Feb. 28th. Burglars took a crowbar to the front door and left with $700 in small items.
According to police records there has not been a steep rise in break-ins in this area. Incidents have involved individuals entering through the back yard and unlocked doors. They seem most interested in laptops. The robberies may be the work of one individual. They are held primarily in the early morning hours and daytime hours. A number of people attending disputed the police numbers. Be sure to contact the police with any suspicious incident or robbery you know of.
There appears to be a woman, sometimes on Juniper and sometimes on Beech or Grape, who has been passing counterfeit $100 bills.Police are holding training today at Reuben Fleet Museum with regard to counterfeit bills. Call Sarah (619) 238-1233 X O.
MAD – David Skillman
MAD has been meeting regularly. This committee is under the oversight of the Greater Golden Hill CDC. New meeting place is a church at 835 25th Street. They meet at 6:30 pm on the third Thursday of the month. A primary project with which the members have been dealing is sidewalk improvement. This line item has been allocated $300,000.
The Golden Hill Planning Committee is forming a subcommittee for the Community Plan update. The committee will include the 8 member Planning Committee and 7 members from the public-at-large. They request someone to represent the South Park community. The time for signing up is very short but may be extended to assure more representation. This also deals with the Historic Resource Survey. Deadline is Friday, February 27th.
Committee Reports
Public Relations Committee – Marsha Smelkinson
Marsha reports that the community business email list is generally up-to-date although there are changes every month with new businesses opening, closings, and/or businesses just getting on board. If you have changes, email Marsha directly at greeninker@yahoo.com.
Ask for Funds campaign for the South Park businesses is making progress. Next meeting Marsha will have a full report of the businesses who have contributed. About 20 businesses have responded so far. The committee (Marsha Smelkinson, Joe Grant & Lisa Vella) hope everyone will participate. Only those who have contributed will be included on future Walkabout postcards and on the South Park Scene webpage. If a business cannot pay the annual fee of $150, it may contribute less, if necessary.
PR Activity Report - Peyton Robertson, PR consultant, states that February was a fairly busy month with local pitches focusing on the Mind-Body connection. The three local biking shops in this area were also highlighted in the North Park News. South Bark Dog Wash also was pitched. She noted that Todd Gloria has included South Park Business Group in his newsletter. Peyton reminded all that she will be on maternity leave beginning March 28th. CORRECTION -- Peyton's business will not be on maternity leave. She and her assistant will continue to work on South Park and all other accounts with no interruption. To read Peyton's report, click on the Media page.
Spring Walkabout (March 28th)- Postcards should arrive this week and will need to be distributed. Posters are also available. (Please contact Studio Maureen for your copies.) Peyton requested all events scheduled for the Walkabout, March 27th, be sent to Marsha. We need merchants to give the information beforehand. It would be ideal if someone accompanies the trolley on its circuit so that s/he can inform riders what planned events are going on in the various businesses and at what time.
Old House Fair (June 20th) -- Maureen Ceccarelli is actively soliciting vendors to sign up for booths at the Old House Fair. These vendors, by definition, need to be able to provide trade services that in some way restore, renew or refurnish old houses, mainly the Craftsman homes found in South Park. Maureen has applications for vendor booths.
Historic and unusual homes are also needed for the Tour of Homes. These homes preferably need to be located within one mile of the event (Beech Street, west of Fern Street). She has identified one of the five homes needed for the tour. Concern was raised that the Home Tour Guide booklet was only given out to people who are going on the tour and believed that there was a need to the booklet distributed more widely. Maureen asked for help from the group to sit on the Old House Fair committee that will begin to meet to plan music, food and children’s events. Please contact Maureen at 619-233-6679 or studiomaureen@yahoo.com.
New Business
South Park Business Group Membership - South Park Business Group has been an informal unincorporated group up until this time with no bylaws or rules. Questions were raised as to membership. Some felt that the group was organized purely for the interests of the for-profit business community and to include, for example, the non-profit business community, diluted the meeting and direction of the organization. This potentially could include schools, churches, and non-profit service organizations, such as local group homes or service organizations. This affects also who should be included in the Walkabout and webpage. Some of those present wanted only the for profit business community represented in the Walkabout, feeling that promoting local businesses was the reason these Walkabout events are held. The Walkabouts encourage both South Park residents and the public outside of South Park to shop in this community. The subject was tabled with the hope expressed that the subject be revisited in the near future.
South Park Business Updates
Studio Maureen – Maureen is offering rental space in the gallery, 14x14 ft., $450.
South Bark Dog Wash – Donna Walker invited everyone to the Best Friends adoption event at South Bark this week (Thursday/Friday) with 16 dogs & 15 or so cats.
Lisa Vella plans to call MAD to replace the bags in the official Poop Bag Dispensers throughout South Park. Also, graffiti around her business is not being removed in a timely manner although she has called the Director who supervises the Urban Corp. David Skillman will follow up on this with the Golden Hill CDC.
“Flawles” Magazine. Two representatives of the new magazine, “Flawles,” who live in South Park announced that this new Lesbian focused magazine is out, currently free, on line, and contains advertising space that local businesses may wish to purchase.
CityBeat Magazine representative also greeted the attendees and offered services for advertising.
Big Kitchen – Larry Himmel of Channel 8 will do a feature on The Big Kitchen this week. He also visited So Childish and will feature that store in an upcoming broadcast.
