Spring Walkabout – Saturday, March 28th
Old House Fair – Saturday, June 20th
South Park Community Yard Sale – Saturday, June 27th
Summer Walkabout – Saturday, July 25th
Harvest Walkabout – Saturday, October 3rd
I. Lisa Vella, South Bark Dog Wash, chaired the meeting. Thanks to Jinna Albright for
coffee. Attending individuals introduced themselves.
II. Police Report – Officer John Graham, SDPD
John Graham researched possible South Park break-ins. Report is incomplete due to
problems resulting from recent department computer update. In last two months 3 or 4 break ins were noted. Calls for crimes occurring are now all routed to the SDPD Northwestern Station. It is possible that several incidents were not reported to the police. Please be sure to report any crime or suspicious incidents to 911 or (619) 744-9502 Lt. Dawn Summers. New City budget recommendation by Mayor includes reducing police in this area (cutting DROP Program) of which John Graham is currently assigned. This would further reduce police presence in South Park
A couple of people noted a suspicious young male, early 20s, who loiters in front of 7-11 as well as the corner Juniper/30th. Last two weeks, police have been diverted to shootings in Southeast. Police are aware that juveniles have been tagging in South Park. Please call (619) 664-6178 if you see tagging in process or observe graffiti. Alex of CDC/Urban Corps are assigned by MAD to paint out neighborhood graffiti.
Concern was expressed over an organized group of ten males in a motor home who are dropped off Wednesday nights just before trash day as observed on (Beech/A & 31st Street) in order to search trash cans for saleable plastic and aluminum.
South Bark Dog Wash alerts other businesses of “identity theft on their business”…first time most people have heard of this with businesses theft, not individuals.
III. MAD (Maintenance Assessment District) Report – David Sklllman
The next priority for the Greater Golden Hill Maintenance District is sidewalk repair.
MAD Board is reviewing private contractor bids.
IV. Public Relations Committee Report– Marsha Smelkinson
Marsha reviewed the fact that the South Park Business Group has hired a part-time
PR professional, Peyton Robertson, to promote South Park businesses. Peyton
is being paid through a small grant we received as well as partially through annual business donations from South Park businesses (Ask For Funds campaign).
Peyton presented a report on the media and community contacts she made in December & January. Among media mentions was U-T’s “25 Things you need to eat before you die” – Vagabond, Rebeccas Coffee House and Big Kitchen were all mentioned.
Please provide Peyton with news about what is going on that’s new, considering
Valentine’s Day as well as the Spring Walkabout. Contact Peyton at (858) 382-4922
or Peyton@baybirdinc.com.
Website (aka www.South ParkScene.com) -- Peyton reported that the highest number of site hits for all of 2008 occurred in December 08 (86,000 hits).
Luci Dumas did wonderful work in 2008 getting the website up and live. Those businesses which contributed $50 toward starting the website are featured in the business listings.
A. Ask for Funds Campaign– Marsha described the importance of this year’s ASK campaign for South Park businesses. The committee is asking for a single $150 contribution from each business for the full year of 2009. Businesses will not be asked to make additional contributions during the year for Walkabouts or for the website. Please remit your $150 to support costs of marketing and public relations in the community. Make checks payable to South Park Business Group and send them to Studio Maureen (2963 Beech Street, San Diego, CA 92102 (619) 233-6679) Joe Grant, Lisa Vella, & and Marsh Smelkinson are on the ASK Committee soliciting
If your business is not in a position to make a $150 contribution, or wants to contribute another amount, please know that your wishes will be respected. Please call Marsha, Lisa or Joe to discuss your intentions.
Although all businesses will continue to be listed on the website, and all those which made the website possible will continue to be featured for the near future, eventually we will feature only those businesses that contribute – both on the website and printed materials, as well as in PR efforts. Please do your part to make our joint activities possible by contributing to this campaign.
B. The SP Business group welcomes suggestions for new PR & community activities. Dr. Joy Boatman suggested that some publicity on Professional Services available in South Park be considered. She also expressed interest in possibly exhibiting or otherwise participating in an upcoming Walkabout.
C. Community Email list is currently composed of two lists: 1) list of members of the SD Business Group participating in the monthly meetings and 2) list of members on the community website. Call Marsha if you are not receiving meeting
minutes or other email notices. She may be reached at (619) 200-4269 or marsha@lucyslist.net
D. Walkabout
In general, members supported the walkabout format. There is a continuing need
to focus some attention on the businesses south of Grape St., including the Beech St. area, as well as businesses on Fern and 30th. The trolley greatly assists in transporting the public both on the north and south side of the community during the walkabouts. Halcyon Tea, which opened in December, expressed interest in joining with fellow merchants to produce some special attraction for that area for the Spring walkabout. Alchemy Restaurant is expected to open in February, bringing more attention to that area.
Christ United Presbyterian Church and Albert Einstein School may be able to add special events to attract the public at future events. For example, the Church held a Health and Wellness Fair at the last walkabout, and were very happy with the response. They plan to do this fair again in the future.
Members supported producing walkabout postcards and possibly posters for distribution prior to the Spring Walkabout. The consensus is that postcards are aneffective method for advertising the event. They agreed the Walkabout Dates 2009
selected can now be publicized as firm dates for the year.
V. Old House Fair (6/20/09) - Maureen Ceccarelli
Maureen reported that she needs help with vendors fitting the Old House Fair criteria.
Vendor cost for booth/participation is $150. She also would like help in identifying 5 houses for the Old House Tour. Preferably the houses are within walking distance of the fair which is located on Beech Street (between 30th & Dale Street) Major sponsor, Ed Landsberg has agreed to again be a major sponsor. Also, Thomas Bike Shop will be a sponsor. Joe Grant (Grant’s Market) will provide the trolley.
